New Delhi: India has registered a significant decline in new covid-19 cases, logging only 124 infections in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said on Tuesday.

The tally of active cases has also receded to 3,001. According to health specialists, the number of hospital admissions has also reduced with the drop in reported cases.

They, however, said elderly individuals with underlying health conditions remain susceptible to infection. Medical experts suggest that such vulnerable populations should get booster shots if they haven’t already and continue adhering to covid-19 safety guidelines.

The XBB.1.16 variant was largely responsible for the recent surge, but scientists suggest that the emergence of hybrid immunity in the Indian population – from both vaccination and prior infection – should prevent the current variant from causing severe illnesses.
