Inside one of Britain’s meat processing factories, where there is an ongoing outbreak of Covid-19, Alex is working “shoulder to shoulder” with his colleagues.
One of hundreds of migrant workers employed at the plant, he works for 30-40 hours a week on a cold, damp production line with poor ventilation.
While some colleagues have recently been issued with visors, very few wear masks, and the protective screening promised by Alex’s employers has yet to arrive. “They are putting people at risk,” he says.
He asked us not to name him or his employer as he said people who had spoken out had lost their jobs. Alex and his housemates recently tested for coronavirus using home testing kits after colleagues began falling ill.
