New Delhi: The government on Sunday claimed Tablighi Jamaat, a religious event that was held in Delhi’s Nizamuddin area just days before the 21-day lockdown was announced, has contributed to doubling of coronavirus cases in India, undoing India’s efforts to contain the spread.
So far, more than 1,200 cases and at least 10 deaths have been linked to people who attended the three-day event at the headquarters of the religious group. “The doubling rate of covid-19 cases in India is currently 4.1 days.
This is due to Tablighi Jamaat. Had this event not taken place, the doubling rate would have been 7.4 days," Lav Agarwal, a joint secretary at the health ministry, said on Sunday.
