Narendra Damodardas Modi (born 17 September 1950) is an Indian politician serving as the 14th and current Prime Minister of India since 2014. He was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and is the Member of Parliament for Varanasi. Modi is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist volunteer organisation. He is the first prime minister outside of the Indian National Congress to win two consecutive terms with a full majority and the second to complete five years in office after Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call last Friday for a 9-minute blackout on 5 April had 119 million viewers glued to their television screens across 199 channels, according to data from the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC).
During the actual blackout period TV viewership declined nearly 60% compared with previous weeks and it was the lowest recorded viewership figure since 2015 far.
Modi asked citizens to light a lamp, candle or shine a mobile flashlight for only 9 minutes, but viewers reportedly abandoned television screens from around 8:53 pm to 9:30 pm on 5 April.
