Narendra Damodardas Modi (born 17 September 1950) is an Indian politician serving as the 14th and current Prime Minister of India since 2014. He was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and is the Member of Parliament for Varanasi. Modi is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist volunteer organisation. He is the first prime minister outside of the Indian National Congress to win two consecutive terms with a full majority and the second to complete five years in office after Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Taking a step toward engaging the political establishment about the situation with the covid-19 epidemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke to former presidents and prime ministers as well as several leaders of national and regional political parties.
This is the first time that Modi has reached out to political leaders across the spectrum. While he has held two rounds of video conferencing with chief ministers in the last fortnight, engagements with floor leaders of all key political parties has been scheduled for 8 April.
Modi spoke on Sunday with former presidents Pranab Mukherjee and Pratibha Patil as well as former prime ministers Manmohan Singh and H.D.
