Police can't enforce two-metre social distance rule in England – but still can in Wales

As Britain’s coronavirus lockdown continues to be eased, police have been told they have no powers to enforce two-metre social distancing in England.

While in Wales, where the guidelines are still to stay at home, two metre social distancing is enforceable by police. Although cops have been breaking up large gatherings in parks and on beaches during the recent spell of fine weather, they are now being advised to stick to the letter of the law.

The College of Policing and the National Police Chiefs' Council has told officers not try to impose common-sense rules. Fresh guidelines issued by the two professional bodies today urge officers to only enforce what is written in law.
