Evidence was emerging that reopening schools and childcare facilities was among the safest things to do over the next couple of months, said Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.
But we need to do it safely, he added. Speaking at a Contact Tracing Centre in Dublin city centre, Mr Varadkar said it was encouraging that there was growing evidence that those who are least at risk from the virus are children and that they do not appear to be super spreaders. "I think that is very significant," Mr Varadkar said.
In addition, Mr Varadkar said that everyone wanted grandparents to be able to hug their grandchildren and that "assuming everything went in the right direction it will be one of the actions that will be possible over the course of the summer".
