Almost a third of people who died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus in England suffered from diabetes, according to new research.
The data, from NHS England, reveals that the percentage of people dying with diabetes is higher than previously thought. Data released last week suggested that just over a quarter (26 per cent) of Covid-19 patients who had died in English hospitals had diabetes - but the latest numbers reveals that the proportion is close to a third.
Overall, 7,466 of the 24,739 coronavirus patients who have died in hospitals in England up to May 17 had type 2 diabetes - and a further 365 patients had type 1 diabtes.
