Coronation Street's Fred Elliot star John Savident's health battle including shock stabbing

Coronation Street legend John Savident, who played the lovable Fred Elliott, has sadly passed away at the age of 86. John was a favourite among fans for his role as the loud and proud butcher on the ITV soap, but off-screen he bravely battled health issues, which he openly discussed.

His agent confirmed the sad news of his passing on Friday 23 February, saying: "We are sad to announce the death of the actor John Savident who died on Wednesday 21 February, he was a much-loved husband and father of two and will be sorely missed by all who knew him." John first appeared on the cobbles in 1994 and quickly won over viewers with his character's unlucky love life, including three marriages and several failed proposals.

In 2006, his character Fred tragically suffered a stroke on his wedding day to Bev Unwin, played by Susie Blake.That same year, John revealed he was awaiting heart surgery, sharing: "Next year I am having a heart operation.

I am having a new valve in. I am sick of the one I have got." He also battled diabetes and underwent a hip replacement in later years.
