The coronavirus crisis in care homes needs to be looked at 'particularly carefully', with a larrge number of facilities affected in the north west, the UK's chief medical officer has said.
At today's daily press conference, the government was asked why the number of coronavirus cases and deaths in the region is one of worst in country.
Professor Chris Whitty, chief medical officer for England, told the briefing there were two areas that needed to be looked at in the north west in particular.
The first is all causes of mortality in the region - both from Covid-19 and other factors - and outbreaks in care homes. "If you look at care homes where there have been outbreaks, quite a few of them have been in the north west," Prof Whitty said.
