A total of 92 coronavirus outbreaks have been detected at care homes across the UK in just the last 24 hours. Chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty told today's daily press briefing that around 13.5 per cent of care homes are dealing with an outbreak of the virus.
That figure is up from just over nine per cent last week. Prof Whitty did not state how many care homes have been affected, but it is believed the number of care homes in the UK is around 11,000.
Public authorities have been attending care homes where an outbreak is suspected to determine if that is the case, he said. He praised the 'absolutely fantastic' care home staff who he said were doing "a very difficult job for the benefit of the people who live with them".
