The UK is likely to be now reaching the peak of coronavirus cases, the Chief Medical Officer has said. Chris Whitty told a Downing Street press conference on Wednesday that we are "probably reaching the peak" of the virus, but that we are "not past it yet." He said that although the curve is beginning to flatten, we can expect to see a high number of deaths relating to COVID-19 for a number of days.

Asked by ITV's Robert Peston about whether the UK will start the conversation about easing lockdown, the Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the message remains clear that people must stay home.

Other European countries such as Spain, Italy and Germany have began discussions about ways in which lockdown measures could be eased.
