Wigan residents should have stay-at-home street parties for VE Day next week after the council’s anniversary celebrations were cancelled, the town hall has said.

The town hall had hoped that their 75th anniversary plans on 8 May were going to be the biggest in the North West - with proposals for a military village, parades and street parties across the three day event.

But with the celebrations cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the council wants residents to ‘turn the borough red, white and blue’ themselves.

The council will provide a number of online resources which they hope will help residents get creative in their commemorations, while still respecting the social distancing rules that are in place.
