Huge emergency services response to moorland blaze 'a mile long' at Deer Hill reservoir

Fire crews have launched a major response after a moorland blaze broke out this afternoon. At least 20 fire engines and specialist units including a drone and command support are attending the incident at Deer Hill reservoir by Marsden moor, just north of Saddleworth Moors.

The first emergency call came in at 12.30pm today. In a press release, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighers are now battling a 'firefront' that is around a mile long.

It is believed to have been caused by a landowner carrying out 'controlled burning'. Fire bosses said they were 'disappointed' by what has happened considering the strain emergency services are already under due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the damage caused by the Saddleworth Moors
