Inside the Nightingale of the North: the huge new coronavirus hospital being built inside the G-MEX

It's a sight we could have never imagined a few months ago: a huge hospital built under the familiar arch of Manchester Central.

The exhibition hall, known to many as the G-MEX, is usually reserved for industry expos, Christmas parties and election counts.

But soon it will open as a hospital dedicated to the care of coronavirus patients: the so-called Nightingale North West. Its transformation is still underway, with NHS leaders, the armed forces and contractors working around the clock to complete the development.

When finished, the Nightingale will house 650 beds for COVID-19 patients, with capacity for another 100 beds, should they be required.
