PHILADELPHIA - A new basketball court paying homage to Philadelphia-native, the late Kobe Bryant, and his daughter Gianna Bryant was unveiled at the Tustin Recreational Playground at 501 W Columbia Avenue in the city's Overbrook neighborhood. Vanessa Bryant and her daughters traveled to Philadelphia on Tuesday to unveil the new court with city leaders and charity partners. She says Philadelphia is where her late husband's love for basketball began and Tustin Playground is a place he frequented when he was younger. "I chose this location so that young people in this community may have a safe space to play with equal opportunity, which was important to Kobe and Gianna," Vanessa Bryant wrote on Instagram. Bryant partnered with Nancy Lieberman Charities' Dream Courts initiative, which strives to make basketball more accessible for children while providing them with a safe environment to play in. The first Kobe & Gianna Bryant Dream Court opened at Pearson Park in Anaheim, California in May. Kobe & Gianna Bryant were among the nine people killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California in January 2020. Since their passing, Vanessa Bryant has kept their memories alive through various charity projects including the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation, the MAMBACITA X DANNJO collection and the new Dream Courts initiative. 

PHILADELPHIA - Four California men were arrested in Pennsylvania with more than a million dollars in fentanyl pills and methamphetamine, according to authorities. The Bensalem Township Police Department, in cooperation Philadelphia DEA agents, made the drug bust Wednesday on the 3300 block of Street Road. Ramon Caro Ramon Caro, 19, Alex Zaragoza, 22, Anthony Gonzales, 26, and Arturo Avila, 37, were each charged with several crimes including possession with intent to deliver. Authorities say the men are from Riverside, California.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose police are investigating the shooting death of three people, a crime they’re characterizing as a murder-suicide, which ended up in the deaths of a couple and an apartment security guard who stepped in to help. The deaths occurred Sunday about 1:30 a.m. in a part of the city not accustomed to violence: Crescent Village Apartments near Cisco Way and River Oaks Parkway.Police said a couple with six children were having a domestic dispute in the parking lot when the apartment security guard tried to intervene. Police say the man fatally shot the guard, the woman and then turned the gun on himself. Police said the gun he used had a serial number scratched off, which is illegal in California. None of those killed were immediately identified. A woman at the complex who didn’t want to be identified said she was watching a movie when she heard something unusual."But I thought it was like knocking or fireworks because this is a pretty safe neighborhood.

SANTA ANA, Calif. - Incarcerated lawyer Michael Avenatti says he plans to plead guilty to charges in a federal court case in Southern California accusing him of cheating clients out of millions of dollars.Avenatti didn’t specify which charges he wants to plead to in a brief court filing Sunday. He said he hasn’t reached a deal with federal prosecutors but wants to change his plea "in order to be accountable; accept responsibility; avoid his former clients being further burdened; save the Court and the government significant resources; and save his family further embarrassment."Federal prosecutors have accused Avenatti of cheating clients out of nearly $10 million by negotiating and collecting settlement payments on their behalf and funneling the money to accounts he controlled.

OAKLAND, Calif. - Southwest Airlines cannot be sued over the death of a passenger whose medical distress was mistaken for unruly behavior by a flight crew out of Oakland, a California appeals court ruled this week. The decision on Wednesday, reported by the Bay Area News Group, upheld an Alameda County trial court’s decision over what happened to Newport Beach resident Rich Ilczyszyn, 46 – a financial trader and CNBC contributor. He ended up suffering a deadly pulmonary embolism while on a flight from Oakland to Orange County on Sept. 19, 2014 – but the flight crew thought he was just being disruptive because of his odd behavior on the plane. His family had filed a wrongful-death suit against Southwest and the flight crew, saying Ilczyszyn died because the crew failed to give him any help. The trial jury returned a verdict that Southwest was negligent but that the negligence was not a substantial factor in Ilczyszyn’s death. That verdict was then appealed.In his family's original wrongful death suit against the airline, his lawyer, Daniel Balaban asked jurors to award Ilczyszyn's family a total of $63 million in damages.According to court records, flight attendants did not realize that Ilczyszyn needed any medical help – all they heard was him "grunting, growling [and] crying" and not complying with their requests to open the door. Southwest attorney Andrew Ryan argued that the crew deemed him a security threat.They called sheriff's deputies to meet them when they landed.

NEW YORK - Michael Avenatti was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison for cheating client Stormy Daniels, the porn actor who catapulted him to fame, of hundreds of thousands of dollars in book proceeds.The California lawyer, currently incarcerated, learned his fate in Manhattan federal court, where Judge Jesse M.
