Coronavirus will fuel a surge in “precarious” work and rule-breaking bosses, MPs were warned today. Employment expert Matthew Taylor, who in 2017 led a study into modern working practices, told the Commons Business Select Committee people should be braced for a shake-up unleashed by the pandemic.
He said: “There is international evidence that when unemployment rises, you're likely to get both an increase in precarious work but you're also likely to get an increase in non-compliant employment – that is to say an increase in employers who are not ensuring that their workers receive their full entitlements and rights.” Precarious work includes posts that are poorly-paid, unprotected and insecure – such as zero-hours contracts.
