A new Covid-19 test has been shown to be effective in detecting the virus in people without symptoms, the Government has said.
Results from a large-scale analysis of LamPORE tests on asymptomatic patients revealed an overall sensitivity of 99.57% and specificity of 99.4%, meaning the test is highly effective for testing people without symptoms in the community.
The tests use swab samples in the same way as a traditional PCR test - but were also found to be effective in saliva samples.
Pilots found tests in patients with symptoms were 100% effective, while swab and saliva samples were more than 99% effective for asymptomatic patients.
