A pensioner has spoken about being arrested and handcuffed while objecting to his wife being taken back to hospital, when she disappeared after discharging herself.Edward Cope, 74, was detained in a police van by Greater Manchester Police on Tuesday, February 18, after his wife had left Wythenshawe Hospital of her own accord.
She had attended the hospital for a capacity assessment, but left when medics decided she did not need further treatment. However, as she chose to leave without being formally discharged, she was deemed to be "missing".
A nurse contacted her husband, who called the police and frantically searched the streets. She eventually arrived back home at 12.30am, but was later told by police and paramedics she needed to return to hospital for an assessment. When Mr Cope objected, he was arrested on suspicion of breach of the peace.
He told Manchester Evening News: "I told them I would not allow her to go back to hospital [and] was then arrested, handcuffed and placed in a van while my wife was questioned."In my 74 years, I have never been in trouble with the police.
