Police called to Home Bargains store as 'staff walk out over social distancing fears'

Cops were called to a Home Bargains store earlier today as shocked employees reportedly turned up to work to find its coronavirus social distancing measures had disappeared overnight.

A worker at the South Shields branch, who asked to remain anonymous, told ChronicleLive staff were shocked at how many people had been allowed inside the shop.

Northumbria Police have confirmed officers were called to the store, but took no further action. However, the force has said it will continue to "monitor the situation" at the popular shop.

A spokesperson for the company denied there was any wrongdoing or relaxation of social distancing at the store - but a staff member who witnessed it told the Chronicle there were issues.
