COLOMBO (News 1st) – The Ministry of Health says that tests have revealed that rice imported within the last few weeks was not contaminated.An official said that more than 120 samples of imported rice were sent for testing for the presence of heavy metals.Accordingly, it has been revealed that the 35 samples do not contain heavy metals.Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health stated that imported maize was also inspected for the same purpose.Test reports on remaining samples are pending.

COLOMBO (News 1st) – One person has been killed and another injured following a shooting incident in Ahungalla Bogahapitiya area last night (23).Police said the victims were traveling in a three-wheeler at the time when they were shot.The deceased has been identified as a 29-year-old male.The injured person has been hospitalised.Police stated that investigations have been initiated in this regard, and it has been revealed that a 12-bore firearm was used. Police added that no further information regarding the suspects has come to light. 

COLOMBO (News 1st) – The President of All Ceylon Poultry Traders' Association, Ajith Gunasekara says that there may be a shortage of eggs in the future due to the decrease in the import of hens required for poultry farming.He said that currently, the hens owned by farms are also being sold for meat.The Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera also said that the importation of hens required for poultry production has been reduced from 80,000 to 10,000.The minister said that he is not hopeful about the future of the poultry industry under the current circumstances.Therefore he added that authorities are looking at short-term solutions such as providing the necessary animal feed to keep the poultry industry running and sustain it through means sourced from within the country rather than through imports.

COLOMBO (News 1st) – The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) emphasizes that the section 2 of the Official Secrets Act enables to declare any land, building, ship, or aircraft as a prohibited place, and does not empower the Minister to declare large areas as High Security Zones.On Friday (23), Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe declared multiple areas in Colombo as High Security Zones.  Accordingly, unless the prior written permission of the Inspector General of Police or Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Western Province is obtained, no person shall conduct or hold a public gathering or procession whatsoever on a road, ground, shore or other open area situated within the High Security Zones.The BASL states that it is deeply concerned with regard to the e declaration of certain areas in Colombo as High Security Zones, and whether the purported order of the President also seeks to create offences under the said order which are not found in the Principal Act.The statement reads; " It is also of utmost concern that the purported order imposes stringent provisions in respect of bail by stating that a person taken into custody in connection with an offence under the said orders shall not be granted bail except by a High Court.

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - Cherry Hill police are investigating a deadly accident in Camden County involving a vehicle and a New Jersey Transit bus. The accident happened in Cherry Hill on westbound Route 70, at Kings Highway, Friday night, just before 6 p.m. A vehicle crashed into the back of the New Jersey Transit bus, according to authorities. Officials said 14 people were on the bus, which was traveling to Philadelphia from Berlin. Cherry Hill police reported Route 70 westbound, at Kings Highway, was closed as they investigate the crash.

OAK FOREST, Ill. - The Cook County Medical Examiner confirmed four people are dead in connection to a barricade situation and house fire in Oak Forest Friday morning. Oak Forest police responded to domestic disturbance call at a home in the 5500 block of Ann Marie Lane around 6:35 a.m.When police arrived they found two victims with gunshot wounds in the driveway and a third victim in the roadway south of the home. Police pulled the victims into their squad cars and transferred them to a safer location to render aid. The victims were then taken to a local hospital where they were treated and later died. Police and other law enforcement officials established a perimeter around the home where the suspect was barricaded.
