Junkyard fire in Philadelphia prompts air quality concern

PHILADELPHIA - Firefighters in Philadelphia are battling a massive junkyard fire that has raised air quality concerns for nearby residents. Firefighters from the Philadelphia Fire Department were called to the junkyard near the intersection of Harbison and Torresdale avenues around 3:30 p.m. SkyFOX flew over the inferno and captured plumes of dense black smoke rising high about the city. Officials instructed residents that live near the fire to avoid the area and stay inside as much as possible. The city has dispatched inspectors to check the air quality for potentially hazardous materials. If going outside is unavoidable, the city advised resident that strenuous exercise and areas of high congestion should be limited. People with underlying medical conditions should monitor for symptoms, including trouble breathing, nausea, and dizziness. PHILADELPHIA - Smoke from a wildfire more than 600 miles away is impacting the Delaware Valley, bringing hazy conditions to the area and prompting air quality alerts. In Halifax, Nova Scotia, more than 16,000 people have been forced to evacuate as a wildfire burns. Authorities say the fire has burned more than 25,000 acres of land and damaged about 200 homes. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the wildfires in a tweet, calling the situation "incredibly serious." Despite being hundreds of miles away, smoke from the burning wildfires is impacting the Delaware Valley. A wildfire burning in Nova Scotia has led to code orange air quality alerts in several New Jersey and Pennsylvania counties.In Chester County, the West Chester Fire Department is warning about hazy smoke and a burning odor in the air. Officials say there is no immediate threat to the area, but code orange air quality alerts have been issued for several counties in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. BRISTOL, Pa. - A Bucks County woman is facing charges after authorities say she shot and killed her husband at a local park Tuesday morning. Sammar Khan, 40, is accused of shooting 38-year-old Faisal Iqbal during what witnesses described to police as an argument at Bristol Borough Wharf. It's alleged that Khan, a Levittown resident, and Iqbal were talking near the coastline when Khan started speaking loudly in another language. LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. - A viral video shows a wild crash in south Georgia.The video appears to be something more out of the video game "Grand Theft Auto" or one of the "Final Destination" movies.The body camera video is from a Lowndes County Sheriff’s deputy, who was responding to a crash along Highway 84. 2-car crash on Wissinoming street leaves 1 dead, police say

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating a two-car crash that left one person dead in Philadelphia. According to authorities, the crash took place on the 6100 block of Harbinson Avenue in the Wissinoming section of the city on Tuesday at 9:16 a.m. Officials say a man driving a black Mercedes C300 was traveling west on Benner Street when he ran a red light and was hit by a white Ford E150 going south on Harbinson Avenue. PHILADELPHIA - A violent Memorial Day weekend in Philadelphia came to a rowdy end as police say more crowds of juveniles caused a large disturbance at a popular destination Monday night.Officers were called to Penn's Landing as a "high volume" of juveniles gathered around 7 p.m.It is unclear how many juveniles were present at the time, but authorities say multiple fights needed to be broken up by officers.Reports of gunshots just blocks away were investigated by police, who say two shell casings were found on South Front Street around 8 p.m. Police have yet to say if the shooting was connected to the crowds.MORE HEADLINES:Three vehicles were also vandalized by juveniles jumping on the windshields, according to police.The crowds were dispersed by 11 p.m.

TRENTON, N.J. - A police pursuit that ended in a crash on a New Jersey highway led to the discovery of firearms stolen from a Pennsylvania gun store, sources say.FOX 29 was on scene at Rt. 29 in Trenton near the Calhoun Street Bridge, where Trenton and Middletown Township Police were investigating and collecting evidence. Police say officers were chasing the car before it crashed on the New Jersey highway. Evidence collected from the vehicle's trunk included multiple firearms, both assault rifles and handguns, with tags from a gun store. Sources tell FOX 29's Steve Keeley, that the chase began in Pennsylvania at a gun store in Bucks County. Five people were captured on surveillance video using a Kia, reported stolen out of Philadelphia, to access the second story of the LugerMan gun store in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, sources say. While inside, the suspects broke glass cases and stole the firearms, per police sources. As officers from the Middletown Township Police Department arrived on scene, they chased the Kia and used stop sticks to disable the vehicle. Law enforcement sources say the vehicle made it over the Calhoun Street Bridge, where Trenton Police got involved, capturing three of the five suspects.
