Stockport council could face a ‘staggering’ £25m shortfall should the government fail to deliver on its promise fully fund local authorities for the cost of COVID-19.

Like town halls across Greater Manchester, Stockport has been spending far more than budgeted, for particularly on adult social care.

Income from car parks, planning charges and leisure fees has dwindled to virtually nothing. In March, town halls were reassured by Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s promise he would do ‘whatever it takes to get the nation through’ while communities secretary Robert Jenrick told bosses the government would ‘be supporting you and ensuring money flows to you’.
