More people are being treated in hospital with coronavirus than when the country first went into lockdown. It comes after the number of new Covid-19 infections quadrupled in just three weeks, government officials said.
Boris Johnson cited the figures as he addressed MPs about a new three-tier system that plunges parts of England into a second lockdown with pubs and bars ordered to shut.
Making a statement in the Commons, the Prime Minister said: "This morning, the deputy chief medical officer set out the stark reality of the second wave of this virus. "The number of cases has quadrupled in the last three weeks, there are now more people in hospital with Covid than when we went into lockdown on March 23 and deaths are already rising." Offici
