The number of coronavirus deaths in the UK is more than 10,000 higher than the Government's official toll as fatalities continue to trend downwards, new figures show.
The true number of deaths is now more than 47,000, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). It found that there were 42,173 deaths involving Covid-19 in England and Wales up to May 15 and registered up to May 23, compared with 31,944 reported by the Department of Health on May 15.
The Government's latest official count was 36,914 deaths in all settings as of 5pm on Sunday. Excess deaths in the UK are now just under 60,000, the ONS figures show.
