The UK's coronavirus death toll is now more than 32,000, making it the highest in Europe. This latest grim statistic came as the Office for National Statistics (ONS) released the figures for deaths in England and Wales.
The ONS reported 7,911 coronavirus deaths in UK care homes, a staggering rise of more than 300% on last week's figure. London has been the worst-affected region of the country, with more than half of all deaths in the capital in the week ending April 24 coronavirus-related.
Speaking this morning in parliament, the UK's Chief Scientific Adviser Patrick Vallance admitted there were things the British government should have done differently in responding to the crisis.
