Dr Poonam Desai, an anti-aging and longevity expert has taken to TikTok, posting a video unveiling the top five breakfast foods to avoid for a healthier start to the day.Her recent video outlines these items with a cautionary note on optimising morning nutrition, reports Surrey Live. She states: "I'm Dr Desai and these are five unhealthy breakfast foods that we should avoid eating routinely in the morning.

The first is going to be pastries - pastries include things like croissants, chocolate croissants. Second is going to be breakfast cereals.

Yes breakfast cereals. It's full of sugar usually so try to avoid breakfast cereals."Third is going to be granola. A lot of granola tends to have oil and sugar in it - again, little nutritional value and we don't want to be having that high of a sugar spike first thing in the morning."Fourth is going to be pancakes and fifth is going to be things like doughnuts - you really want to avoid a big sugar spike first thing in the morning." For those who are looking to loose weight, a breakfast like this could counteract the efforts by inducing hunger soon after breakfast.

Cereal are a highly processed food, and are flagged by nutrition experts for their high sugar content, as well as pancakes, having a high content of fat, salt and sodium.
