There will be no formal Christmas light switch-on events in South Ayrshire this year after the council expressed fears over the high number of coronavirus cases.The local authority pulled the plug on the festive celebrations this afternoon but insisted that the towns and villages of the region will still twinkle with lights throughout December.Councillor Chris Cullen said it would be "irresponsible" to encourage large crowds to gather while cases remain high and acknowledged that the public would be disappointed at the decision.The council's portfolio holder for economy and culture said: "I know that many local people look forward to seeing the annual festive light displays, and some may find it disappointing that formal switch-on events
