Coronavirus lockdown 'could lead to children attacking own parents,' police warn

Hundreds of parents in the UK have reported being attacked by their own children, as fears grow the coronavirus lockdown is leading to a spike in domestic assaults.

Northumbria Police have commissioned a study looking into the concept of "child to parent violence" following the shocking death of a mother at the hands of her 16-year-old son.

The unnamed woman's death has been classed as domestic abuse because her son had turned 16. But academics at Northumbria University in Newcastle believe risks in cases such as these are often present for many months or years before.

They say agencies must act on this behaviour when it is first brought to their attention and work in partnership with others to "minimise the long-term impact on families".
