Covid-19: Karnataka in no hurry to open liquor stores as excise department exceeds target

BENGALURU : The Karnataka government is in no hurry to open liquor shops in the state, as the excise department has already managed to exceed its fiscal target by almost ₹500 crore, said two people aware of the matter.

The additional revenue, despite almost a month of closure in March gives the state government enough room to keep shutters down till at least the end of the 21-day lockdown period announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The spread of the novel coronavirus has added enormous strain on businesses and the already fledgling economy leading to shortage of resources in the fight against covid-19. “When sales closed on Monday (24 March), we had already clocked in around ₹21,400 crore," said one of the two people cited above,
