New Delhi: India saw a modest increase of 297 new covid-19 cases in India in the last 24 hours, a stark drop reflecting the ebbing influence of the XBB.1.16 Omicron variant, according to a statement released by the Union health ministry Thursday.
The recent downtrend has reduced the active caseload to 3925. The slowdown has caused a corresponding decline in hospital admissions, though experts caution that elderly individuals or those with pre-existing conditions remain susceptible.
The Omicron variant had fuelled a significant spike in India’s cases over the past few months. Scientists believe that a hybrid immunity, developed from both vaccination and previous infections, is mitigating the severity and hospitalization rates of current variants.
The recovery rate, marked by approximately 445 million individuals overcoming the infection, is nearing 98.8%, with 583 recoveries documented in the last day.
