As the clock ticks on the Government’s pledge to deliver 100,000 coronavirus tests a day by the end of this month, there is an eerie silence at deserted drive-through centres across the land.
When we visited the huge facility for NHS, police, fire and prison staff and their families at Chessington World of Adventures, Surrey, yesterday the only people there were idling staff.
It is one of just 26 such sites across the UK – and we discovered similar disturbing scenes at many others. Experts say testing is key to easing the lockdown but critics warn the drive-throughs are too far away with many exhausted, stressed workers forced to travel “hundreds of miles”.
