The Garda Commissioner has said today that in spite of a continued high level of public compliance with Covid-19 policing measures, spitting and coughing attacks on gardaí are continuing.
Seventy such incidents occurred in the five weeks that the public health restrictions have been in place. This is a rise of six in the past week.
Gardaí revealed they have also had to use spit guards - which is deemed a use of force - more than 50 times. New figures released today show that, while the vast majority of people continue to comply with the restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, significant issues remain.
