NEW DELHI : Non resident Indians and foreign visitors held up in India due to suspension of air travel will not have to count the duration of their prolonged stay owing to the coronavirus crisis while deciding their tax residence status, the government said on Friday.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Friday relaxed the rules in view of the representations from such people expressing concerns that they will be required to file tax returns as Indian residents.
A CBDT circular said such period of prolonged stay will be discounted while determining residency status. Accordingly, those who could not leave the country before end of March will not have to count the last ten days of the month from 22 March, when India suspended
