Campaigners have slammed "shameful" anti-abortion protestors as a US-based group announced a fresh wave of "vigils" in Scotland.Texas-based 40 Days for Life confirmed it was holding a series of "prayer vigils" outside the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) in Glasgow.
The activity, which will take place every day from March 5 until April 13, has been announced despite new law to prevent such demonstrations near abortion clinics.The group will hold "silent prayers" on Hardgate Road, which is well within view of the hospital's maternity unit.
Organiser Mary Gilroy promised her members will not breach new buffer zone laws, which were passed last year to protect people from harassment and obstruction within 200m of any clinic.Her pledge has, however, been slammed as "shameful" by Scottish Greens MSP Gillian Mackay after a 74-year-old woman became the first person in Scotland to be arrested for staging a similar protest at the QEUH last week.
Mackay - who brought the Safe Access Zones bill forward - told the Record: “These protests are designed to target and stop patients from accessing the healthcare they are entitled to.
