The official death toll of NHS staff with coronavirus has risen to 27, the Health Secretary said today. Matt Hancock said the grim total has risen from 19 since the last time he gave an update on the weekend.
They include pregnant Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong, 28, who worked as a nurse on a general ward at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital for five years.
She died on Sunday and more than £65,000 has been raised for her baby daughter, who was delivered successfully by caesarean section.
Mr Hancock told BBC Breakfast there had "very sadly" been 27 verified deaths amongst NHS staff with coronavirus. The real total is known to be higher than 28 as tragic stories emerge across the country - but official figures lag slightly behind.
