The government has promised to recruit 'tens of thousands' of new social care staff and will pay for their induction training amid mounting criticism of its response to the coronavirus epidemic.

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock set out a package of measures aimed at combating the spread of Covid-19 in care homes.

The plans included increased testing and improved access to protective equipment as well as measures designed to help social care workers enjoy similar benefits to NHS staff.
