Petr Cech made an undercover trip to Germany to help Chelsea win the race for Timo Werner's signature, according to reports.
Chelsea technical director Cech joined Blues boss Frank Lampard on the trip, which took place before the global coronavirus lockdown.
Liverpool were hot favourites to sign Germany international striker Werner and had looked into the possibility of triggering the star's £50million release clause before it's expiration on June 15.
But the COVID-19 pandemic has played havoc with the club's finances and despite Jurgen Klopp's interest in Werner, Liverpool were forced to give up on signing the RB Leipzig forward.
