Up to 1.5 million people in England who face the highest risk of being hospitalised by the coronavirus should shield themselves and stay at home, the government has said.

They include people being treated for cancer, transplant patients, and those with severe respiratory conditions. Experts today urged them to remain indoors for three months.

They should avoid family gatherings or meeting friends, and not go out for shopping, leisure, or travel. The advice came as the Prime Minister warned the coronavirus outbreak is accelerating and could 'overwhelm' the NHS.
