Struggling firemen are now rescuing obese people from their homes every other day in just one county. Firefighters were called to help paramedics move 185 overweight patients in Kent alone in the last year.

Removing them often means taking out windows, doors and in some cases even brickwork. Rescuers are trained to pick up people weighing up to 78 stone with body slings, lifting gear and slide sheets.

The firefighters in Kent had to buy three rescue dummies to use for training. Last month, two crews were needed in Gravesend to lift a “severely overweight man” with breathing problems out of his house.

The data revealed a slight drop in numbers in 2019 compared to 2018, but showed a 65% spike from 2017. The Kent Fire and Rescue Service
