The government’s furlough scheme to help pay people’s wages and support businesses amid the Covid-19 pandemic has gone live.
The first applications for the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme have now been made after the scheme officially opened this morning.
In the first 30 minutes, around 67,000 claims from employers had been made, according to HM Revenue & Customs. Many shops, restaurants, hotels and other service industries in the UK found themselves with no customers after being forced to close amid the pandemic, and many other firms have had work cancelled due to the lockdown.
It means that millions of workers are expected to be put on furlough leave in the UK during the coronavirus pandemic. Here's everything you need to know
