colorectal cancer, also known as colon or rectal cancer. There are several factors that have been proven to increase a person’s risk of being diagnosed with colon cancer, some of which are unavoidable such as family history. Some modifiable risk factors include an unhealthy diet, not enough exercise, smoking and high alcohol consumption. However, scientists now believe a person’s height is another unavoidable factor that could increase a person’s risk of colon cancer, according to a new study published in the journal American Association for Cancer Research. For the study, researchers observed adults between the ages of 40 and 85 who were undergoing outpatient colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening. The individuals had to have no prior history of colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, collagenous or autoimmune colitis, ischemic bowel and other illnesses that could lead to colon cancer. Researchers found that the individuals who were taller had a 24% higher risk of developing colorectal cancer as opposed to their shorter counterparts. "Every 10-cm increase in height imposed a 14% higher risk of colorectal cancer after adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral, and other known risk factors," study authors wrote. Researchers suggested the reason why taller people may be at higher risk for being diagnosed with colorectal cancer is that they have more body mass, thus have an increased chance of developing a malformation such as a colon adenoma. "More active cell proliferation in organs of taller people could increase the possibility of mutations leading to malignant transformation," the study added. FILE - Colon cancer, tumor on the caecum and ileocolic valve, visualization on a radial CT scan.

Iowa tornadoes: 4 of 7 killed were in same family, authorities sayAccording to the NWS, each survey team is equipped with a technology kit before they head to the site of the storm damage. The kit includes things such as a GPS, a computer with damage survey software, an atlas, a digital camera, a compass and a notebook."Most commonly, a survey team will conduct a full ground survey in order to assess tornado damage, but occasionally, a team may also conduct an aerial survey if the spatial extent of the damage is large enough," the NWS office in Amarillo, Texas, wrote in a 2011 post about damage surveys.According to the NWS, most teams will start with determining the starting and ending points of the suspected tornado.

Police in Chester are investigating a shooting that sent one person to the hospital Sunday night.  CHESTER, Pa. - An investigation is underway in Delaware County after a person was shot Sunday night. Police say the incident happened on West 9th and Lloyd Streets in Chester around 10:30 p.m. According to authorities, one person was shot in the head. They were taken to an area hospital and their condition is unknown at this time, police say. This is a developing story.

BUCKS COUNTY, Pa - A Bucks County family is waiting with bated breath as their newly adopted son is stuck in a bomb shelter in Ukraine. Maryana Kravchenko and her husband Dmitriy recently returned to Lower Southampton, Pennsylvania, from the Ukraine where they adopted 16-year-old Maksym. They met the teen three years ago as part of the Open Hearts and Homes for Children program. Maryana and her husband adopted Maksym from Ukraine on Feb.

MODESTO,Calif. - A Modesto mother faces close to 20 years behind bars after pleading guilty to conspiring with her son, who is on Death Row at San Quentin, to file fraudulent stimulus checks.Sheila Denise Dunlap admitted on Friday that she and her son obtained the personal information of more than 9,000 people to apply for stimulus checks in 2020.Investigators say she used her own bank account information to get more than $145,000 in these payments.In May, the US Department of Justice charged the 51-year-old woman with a wire fraud conspiracy after they said she filed fraudulent applications for Economic Impact Payment payments, commonly known as stimulus checks.  The EIP program was part of the CARES Act, a federal relief bill signed to address the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. MORE: California man charged with stealing $1M in COVID benefitsDunlap admitted in her plea agreement that her son, identified only by the initials D.W., sent her the personal information of his fellow prisoners along with information of others whom they suspected might qualify as non-filers of 2018 or 2019 income tax returns. Dunlap admitted she used this personal information to file multiple fraudulent claims through the Internal Revenue Service’s online EIP Portal.  In each of the applications, Dunlap listed her own Bank of America account to receive the payments, prosecutors said.In the plea agreement, Dunlap acknowledged that her son advised her to file the fraudulent claims by first using information of the youngest adults listed.  Both D.W.

PHILADELPHIA - Three people are in the hospital after two motorcycles crashed in Rhawnhurst on Sunday afternoon, according to police. Authorities say a 2016 Suzuki motorcycle and 2019 Can Am motorcycle were traveling on Roosevelt Boulevard when the Suzuki attempted to pass. The two motorcycles made contact, causing the Can Am's operator to fall from her motorcycle and the Suzuki crashed to the ground, according to police. All three people were transported to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, police say. The operators of both motorcycles, age 37 and 34, are listed in critical condition, according to police.

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court said Monday it will not take up the sexual assault case against comedian Bill Cosby, leaving in place a decision by Pennsylvania's highest court to throw out his conviction and set him free from prison.The high court declined prosecutors' request to hear the case and reinstate Cosby's conviction. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court last year threw out Cosby's conviction, saying the prosecutor who brought the case was bound by his predecessor’s agreement not to charge Cosby.As is typical, the Supreme Court did not say anything in rejecting the case.

Several people were displaced after a fire burned through a rowhouse in West Philadelphia on Saturday.  PHILADELPHIA - Several people have been displaced after a fire tore through a two-story rowhouse in West Philadelphia early Saturday morning. According to fire officials, firefighters responded to the 500 block of Salford Street around 4:53 a.m. where smoke was coming from the residence. Firefighters rescued two people from the home and they were taken to the hospital.

BARTOW, Fla. - A contract worker assigned to be the spotter for heavy equipment coming in and out of a Polk County landfill was crushed by a bulldozer while using a porta-potty, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.Deputies say a heavy equipment operator, who was also a CertiTemp contract employee, was operating a bulldozer at the landfill while Aaron Henderson,40, was assigned as a "spotter," meaning he was tasked with being on the ground, providing traffic control to incoming and outgoing dump trucks dumping trash within the landfill. Deputies say around 5:10 p.m., the end of a regular workday, the bulldozer driver began to drive his assigned bulldozer up an embankment towards a "heavy equipment staging area" to park his bulldozer for the end of the day. While doing so, the front blade of his bulldozer was elevated 3-4 feet off the ground, and he could not see directly in front of him due to the blade obstructing his view, according to PCSO. Deputies say the driver went up the embankment towards the staging area, and once on level ground, he began to turn his bulldozer and heard a loud crumble.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento Sheriff's Office issued a press release Friday with more details on the background of the shooter who killed his daughters, their chaperone and then himself at a Sacramento church earlier this week. According to the sheriff, the shooter, who was previously identified as David Fidel Mora-Rojas, 39, had lived at the church, was in the country illegally and the department said they had prior contact with him on April 17, 2021. Immigration officials told Associated Press on Friday, Mora-Rojas was in the United States illegally. A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman said Mora-Rojas overstayed his visa after entering California from Mexico in December 2018.The Merced County Sheriff's Office said because of California's so-called sanctuary state law it did not inform immigration officials last week that Mora-Rojas had been arrested for punching an officer. Authorities say a man shot and killed his three children, one other person and then turned the gun on himself at a church in Sacramento on Monday, the sheriff's office confirmed.

LEHI, Utah - 11-year-old Landen certainly gets an A-plus for effort after recently building a Lego replica of his teacher.The sixth-grader spent four months and up to an estimated 10,000 Lego bricks to build the gift, according to his mother, Rachel. Landen then unveiled the display in Collin Seastrand’s class at Meadow Elementary School in Lehi, Utah last month for the school’s Teacher Appreciation Week, Rachel added."Landen chose a Lego replica because his passion is Legos, and he felt it would be a good way to uniquely show how much Mr. Seastrand means to him," Rachel told FOX Television Stations.
