UK coronavirus death toll rises by 674 in 24 hours

The number of people who have died in hospital after contracting coronavirus has hit 26,771 today. The UK death toll is up by 674 from a total of 26,097 recorded on Wednesday according to figures announced by Boris Johnson today.

A total of 6,033 people have tested positive in the last 24 hours, bringing the nation's case total to 171,253, up from 165,221 yesterday.

The number of deaths include those who have died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Wednesday.

There were 81,611 tests were carried out yesterday, the last day before the government's target of testing 100,000 by the end of this week.
