Coronavirus deaths in care homes in England Wales have shot up from 217 in one week to more than 1,000 according to figures released this morning by the Office for National Statistics.
And the recorded figure could be deflated slightly as some registration offices were closed on Good Friday - which was April 10.
The data reveals there were 1,662 deaths involved Covid-19 in England and Wales registered during the week up to April 10 outside of hospitals.
Of these, 1,043 took place in care homes and 466 were in private homes. A further 87 were in hospices, 21 in other communal establishments and 45 elsewhere.
