Coronavirus: Government tells Sports Direct to close during lockdown

The government has told Sports Direct to close after Mike Ashley's empire tried to stay open during the coronavirus lockdown.

Michael Gove, the Cabinet Office Minister, said the tycoon must "back off" and allow his thousands of workers to stay at home to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley's Frasers Group, which includes Sports Direct and Evans Cycles, wrote to all workers within 30 minutes of Prime Minister Boris Johnson's decision to shut down all non-essential retailers last night.
