More than 1,000 people across the UK have died from coronavirus, the government has said. The number of people to have tested positive for COVID-19, as of 9am today (Saturday, March 28), stands at 17,089 - a rise of 2,546 from 14,543 on Friday.
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said 1,019 people have now died having contracted the virus - an increase of 260 on Friday's figures.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson is among those to have tested positive - as is Health Secretary Matt Hancock. The health expert leading the government's response, Public Health England chief medical officer Chris Whitty, said he was experiencing symptoms on Friday.
