Coronavirus: NHS's top doctor warns UK will 'do well' if fewer than 20,000 die

If there are less than 20,000 deaths in the UK from coronavirus then 'we will have done very well', NHS England medical director Professor Stephen Powis said this afternoon.

Today the UK death toll from Covid-19 reached 1,019. Prof Powis, speaking at the daily coronavirus briefing alongside Business Secretary Alok Sharma, was asked how full intensive care beds were in the UK.

He replied: "We are not at capacity yet within London, but beds are being opened all the time to produce that extra surge capacity." Mr Powis insisted it's "possible to get on top of this virus".

Last week Boris Johnson, who is in self-isolation after himself contracting the deadly bug, said the UK could 'see the pandemic off' in 12 weeks.
