Covid infection rates in Scotland as cases in the UK soar - check your local area

Coronavirus cases are on the rise again, sparking fears that another tough winter may be heading our way. According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), parts of southern Scotland are currently the worst hit by rising Covid rates at the moment, as well as the midlands, the north west and north east of England.

The weekly number of UK cases rose by 1,472 in the week running up to September 23, prompting fears that more pressure will be put on health services during the cold winter months, the Mirror reports.It comes after a new highly-mutated strain of the virus appeared in the UK during the summer.

BA.2.86, nicknamed Pirola, caused concern as it was already transmitting within communities, but the UKHSA has also highlighted the dangers of flu this winter.According to Public Health Scotland (PHS), there were six cases of Pirola in Scotland as of September 25, and the health board has said it is "monitoring the evolving situation and are investigating the cases." More than 12,000 confirmed cases of Covid have been recorded in the UK in the week running up to September 23, but it's likely the actual number is much higher, as many testing facilities have been scrapped.
