An expert has warned that the risk of a ‘major’ earthquake in the Greek islands surrounding Santorini remains, despite changes in seismic activity.
It comes after the Greek government declared a state of emergency in Santorini on Thursday, February 6 after hundreds of undersea tremors were recorded near the island.
On Wednesday an earthquake measuring a magnitude of 5.2, the most powerful yet, was recorded. Thousands of people have been evacuated from the island - around three quarters of the island’s population - while emergency services have deployed as a precautionary measure.
Seismology professor Costas Papazachos said that the “possibility of a major earthquake in the wider Cyclades region cannot be ruled out,” local news site ekathimerini.com reports.
