Greggs scraps planned store openings over fears of 'excessive numbers' during lockdown

Popular British baker Greggs has pulled the plug on plans for a re-opening trial over fears mass crowds will arrive at its doors.

The takeaway chain had planned to open 20 shops in Newcastle as part of a trial to get stores open again during the coronavirus lockdown.

But it says it will now operate the trial "behind closed doors". A spokeswoman said: "Due to significant interest in our 20-shop trial, and the risk that excessive numbers of customers may plan to visit Greggs, we will now initially operate these trials behind closed doors in order to effectively test our new operational safety measures.
